The service that YCRC has provided me, particularly through Ben Evans, has been excellent. My lab is an X-ray crystallography lab, but we are moving towards cryo-EM and I have been learning the technique myself. The computing environment for this technique is of course extremely important and Ben has been very responsive to my queries. I have found that all problems that I queried him about have been rapidly fixed. Furthermore, Ben came to my office in the Med School to discuss computing options, which was helpful (and personalized YCRC in a way that I have rarely encountered for computational support). Of particular note he installed the program cryoSPARC for me to use, this has a web-based front end so is non-trivial to set up on the Farnam cluster. Other members of Yale’s burgeoning cryo-EM community have been asking me how I got cryoSPARC to work, and I believe that Ben has helped set them up too.

 

Also, I would like to comment on the new cryo-EM-specific GPU nodes. These have been very helpful to the community and are much faster. As the numbers of cryo-EM users grow, I think that further investment in dedicated GPU nodes will both be needed and help facilitate the growth of the community.
