High Performance Computing

The Yale Center for Research Computing provides support for high performance computing (HPC) at Yale. The YCRC currently manages four shared Linux clusters:

  • Grace - our largest cluster, for general purpose HPC
  • McCleary - specialized for medical, life science applications as well as the Yale Center for Genome Analysis and its users.
  • Milgram - HIPAA aligned, for use on projects that may involve sensitive data, including the Department of Psychology.

We work with faculty and research groups across a variety of disciplines to take advantage of these advanced computational resources. Any Yale faculty member with a primary or secondary appointment in a unit of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences or the Yale School of Medicine will be provided with a Principal Investigator (PI) group account on the YCRC’s HPC resources upon request. Other university faculty or staff may apply for such an account, subject to additional administrative approval. Once a group account has been created, and with approval of the PI, members of the PI’s research group may request individual accounts under the group account. Terms regarding account creation and access are subject to change. For more information on getting access to and using the clusters, visit HPC Support.

A standard PI group account provides access to a large number of public compute nodes and limited free high performance storage. Faculty can also purchase additional dedicated compute nodes and storage for their research needs. See our HPC Policies for more information on use of the YCRC HPC resources.

In addition to the high performance storage, we can also mount Storage@Yale, which is a service offered by Yale ITS to University members. To request a Storage@Yale allocation on the clusters, click "Request Service" on the Storage@Yale page (and specify in the request that the share will be mounted on the HPCs).
